Client Story | Disability Benefits Secured by FRLS for Client with Mental Health Challenges

April 28, 2026

A middle-aged woman came to Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) for help after struggling with severe mental health issues. FRLS is a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal aid to qualified individuals, families, and vulnerable communities across 13 Florida counties and to farmworkers statewide.

Our client was erratic and prone to making rash, unsafe decisions; conditions that made it impossible for her to maintain employment or care for herself. She desperately needed financial and medical support to stabilize her life.

A FRLS attorney represented her at her disability hearing and successfully argued that her mental health conditions met Social Security’s disability criteria. The judge issued a favorable decision, awarding her $63,600 in retroactive benefits, plus ongoing monthly benefits of $1,200 and Medicare coverage.

For individuals with severe mental health challenges, disability benefits are more than financial assistance; they are a lifeline. These benefits help cover housing, food, and medical care, providing stability and dignity for people who cannot work due to serious health conditions.

FRLS has been providing free legal services to qualified residents across Florida since 1966. If your benefits are denied or stopped, reach out to us at 1-888-582-3410 or apply online at FRLS.org.
