Client Story | FRLS Helps Senior Revoke a Power of Attorney After Experiencing Exploitation

July 8, 2026

A client came to Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) seeking help after becoming concerned that he was a victim of senior exploitation. FRLS is a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal services to qualified individuals, families, and vulnerable communities across 13 Florida counties and to farmworkers statewide.

Our client had recently undergone a major surgery. In preparation for the procedure, he granted his son a Durable Power of Attorney in 2024, believing it would help ensure his affairs were managed responsibly during his recovery. Instead, what was intended as a temporary safeguard became a tool for misuse of authority.

After the surgery, the client discovered troubling actions were taken without his knowledge or consent. His son had sold the client’s vehicle, listed the client’s home for sale despite his clear intent to rent it, and allegedly withdrew significant funds from the client’s bank accounts. These actions raised serious concerns about financial exploitation and the abuse of a trusted legal arrangement.

The client came to FRLS seeking to revoke the Power of Attorney and regain control over his personal and financial matters. A FRLS attorney promptly prepared the necessary Revocation of Power of Attorney documents and provided detailed guidance on how to properly execute them, ensuring the client could protect himself moving forward.

For many seniors, a Power of Attorney is meant to provide peace of mind, not open the door to exploitation. FRLS has been providing free legal services to qualified residents across Florida since 1966. If you or someone you know is facing elder abuse or financial exploitation, reach out to us at 1-888-582-3410 or apply online at FRLS.org.
