Client Story | FRLS Helps Elderly Veteran Complete His Last Will & Testament

May 2, 2025

(FLORIDA) – A veteran in his sixties recently began to make preparations for his later years. When he decided he needed to establish a Medical Surrogate plan, he went to the Veterans Health Administration (VA). And when he knew it was time to formalize his will, he sought free legal help from Florida Rural Legal Services (FRLS).

FRLS is a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal aid to qualified individuals, families, and vulnerable communities across 13 Florida counties and to farmworkers statewide. Our organization regularly assists clients with matters related to elder law, from establishing guardianship to combatting age discrimination to – in the case of this client – helping individuals with estate planning and the creation of wills and advance directives.

Through the Wills for Heroes program, FRLS attorneys worked with the client to ensure that his last will and testament was tailor-made to suit his wishes. Moreover, since the client wanted to execute the will in his hometown, our team mailed a paper copy straight to his home. A FRLS attorney even met him in his hometown to have him sign a retainer and notarize the document.

Ultimately, the client ended up with a document he approved, taking a big step in the right direction of comprehensive estate planning.

  2. We ensure that you stay in control of decision-making, assisting you with durable power of attorney plans, guiding you through long-term healthcare options, and providing help with financial planning, taxes, and housing needs.
  3. We keep your support system strong, whether that means navigating complex guardianship proceedings, mediations with long-term care facilities, or other circumstances that require you to invoke the full force of your rights.
