Client Story | FRLS Pro Bono Attorney Negotiates Settlement for Child Support and Alimony in Divorce Case

· Client Story,Family Law,News Releases,FFLA,LSC

Our client, a mother in the midst of a divorce, reached out to Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) after her previous attorney was no longer able to represent her after the initial hearing. In desperate need of representation, she asked FRLS if there was a Pro Bono attorney willing to take her case. The client shared a home and a minor child with her husband.

FRLS is a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal aid to qualified individuals, families, and vulnerable communities across 13 Florida counties and to farmworkers statewide. Family law matters are some of the most common case types we see at our law firm, and our volunteer attorneys are no strangers in handling these cases with dedication, even with short notice.

Our team was able to connect her with an attorney, who represented her in mediation and prepared to represent her at the final hearing. Our client, who did not know the ins-and-outs of the court system, was informed on potential outcomes at the final hearing and advised in her best interest as well as her disabled child.

At the final hearing, the attorney negotiated a settlement where our client obtained majority timesharing, monthly child support payments, and alimony payments. Both parties agreed to sell the home they shared and split the proceeds in accordance with equitable distribution. Overall, our client ultimately saved around $16,500 in attorney fees by having a Pro Bono attorney through FRLS.
