FRLS's Disaster Aid Continues Amid Start of 2025 Hurricane Season

Although hurricane season is just beginning this year, some Florida communities are still facing the aftermath of Hurricanes Debby, Milton, and Helene. Florida Rural Legal Services (FRLS) won’t leave devasted communities behind but instead will continue to provide the legal support individuals and families still need. FRLS, our non-profit law firm, provides free civil legal aid to qualified individuals, families, and vulnerable communities across 13 Florida counties and to farmworkers statewide.

Knowing how to prepare yourself before a disaster and what to do in the aftermath is essential
information for any Florida resident. Here are some quick tips for hurricane preparation:

Before a Disaster

  • Gas up your vehicle
  • Get cash
  • Charge important electronics
  • Take pictures or videos of your home and its contents
  • Have a supply of medication and nonperishable food
  • Protect important documents in waterproof bag

  • File claims directly with your insurance company
  • Apply for FEMA benefits if eligible
  • Avoid contractor home repair fraud by following our guide
  • If you have relocateddue to a disaster, notify the IRS
