(FLORIDA) - If you’re a Florida native, you know our state is a popular retirement and seasonal
destination for adults 60 years and older. What you may not know is that elder law services
like creating wills and advance directives aren’t just for adults in that age group. Planning for your future is more than just saving money, and you can start making legal decisions about what will happen to your assets long before you reach retirement.
At Florida Rural Legal Services (FRLS) we encourage adults of any age to plan for their future well before it’s necessary. FRLS, our non-profit law firm, provides free civil legal aid to qualified individuals, families, and vulnerable communities across 13 Florida counties and to farmworkers statewide.
From advanced directives and wills to elder exploitation and housing issues, there is a lot to consider when creating an estate plan. This written plan is called an "estate plan" and typical consists of documents like last wills and testaments, durable powers of attorney, designations of healthcare surrogates and living wills.
We can help with:
- Living wills- A document that says what medical care you do or don’t want if you can’t speak for yourself.
- Advance Directives- A form that lets you choose a medical decision-maker and share your healthcare wishes in case youcan't.
- Elder Abuse- When someone hurts, takes advantage of, or neglects an older adult.
- Adult Guardianship- A legal process where someone is chosen to make decisions for a person who can’t do it on their own.
- Probate- Probate is a court-supervised process used to wind up your personal affairs. It can be used to transfer your assets to the people you have named in your will or who are entitled to receive your assets under Florida law.
- Wills- A written document that instructs others what to do with your property after you die. Requirements for a valid will may vary from state to state.
- And much more...
Our attorneys recently helped a veteran take a big step in the right direction of comprehensive estate planning, by creating a will that reflected his priorities and legacy. Estate planning is more than doing legal paperwork, it’s about making sure your wishes are respected and protecting those you love most. If you’re ready to follow our client’s lead, our team is here to help you take the first step.
