FEMA to Implement Rent for Hurricane Ian Survivors in Temporary Housing, Non-Profit Law Firm to Help Appeal Rent Notices for Qualified Residents

(FORT MYERS, Fla.)- Beginning April 1, FEMA will initiate rent charges for individuals residing in temporary housing units provided in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. The rental rates, based on the size and location of the housing unit. Rates are anticipated to range from $1,400 to $1,700 monthly. However, residents will have an opportunity to appeal the rental amounts. It is crucial that residents file their notice of appeal promptly to preserve their right to dispute the rent. If residents are unable to afford the rent, they should seek assistance on how to appeal.

FEMA has extended the Direct Temporary Housing program for six months until September 29, 2024, for eligible households in Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Hardee, Lee, Sarasota, and Volusia counties.

Since the onset of Hurricane Ian, FEMA has provided temporary housing units to over 1,300 displaced families statewide. Collaborating with the Florida Division of Emergency Management and local partners, approximately 650 families have transitioned to more permanent housing solutions.

Efforts to assist the remaining 700 families still residing in temporary housing are ongoing. FEMA, in coordination with state and local authorities and volunteers, continues to work towards finding permanent housing solutions for these individuals. Disaster case managers are offering personalized assistance to address their specific needs.

In addition, FRLS stands ready to support qualified individuals grappling with legal challenges arising from the disaster, including insurance disputes, contractor issues, foreclosure threats, and other legal hurdles.
