(LAKE WORTH, Fla.) — At the recent “Road to Success” luncheon hosted by Dress for Success Palm Beaches, community members had the opportunity to learn about local legal resources and support services. Kanisha Taylor, Esq., Managing Attorney for Florida Rural Legal Services (FRLS) offices in Riviera Beach/West Palm Beach and Belle Glade, shared at the July 16th luncheon how her team is helping local residents overcome some of the toughest legal challenges.

The non-profit law firm, FRLS, has seen a growing need for free legal aid in Palm Beach County, particularly in housing and family law. In 2024, those two areas made up the majority of FRLS’s caseload in Palm Beach County, reflecting the real-life challenges many local families face, whether it's the risk of eviction or navigating custody disputes.

During the event, Taylor explained how FRLS provides a range of free civil legal services, including help with divorce, child support, domestic violence protection, eviction defense, foreclosure prevention, consumer rights, and help with issues dealing with public benefits like Social Security and Medicaid. FRLS also takes on elder law and disability rights cases.

To qualify for FRLS services, residents interested in assistance can call the toll-free intake line at 1-888-582-3410, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., where staff help determine eligibility and guide callers through the process.

The event, held at Dress for Success Palm Beaches, brought together community members focused on empowering women through professional development and resources.

Access to justice should not depend on a person’s ability to pay for legal representation. Funding from Funding Florida Legal Aid plays a critical role in ensuring that low-income Floridians have access to free civil legal services when they need them most. Through grants provided to organizations like Florida Rural Legal Services, individuals and families facing serious legal challenges can receive professional legal guidance and representation. This support helps address issues affecting disaster survivors rebuilding their lives after catastrophic storms, veterans at risk of homelessness due to denied benefits, and elderly or disabled individuals seeking to secure the benefits and protections they are entitled to. By strengthening civil legal aid programs, FFLA helps remove barriers to stability, safety, and opportunity for vulnerable Floridians.
